چکیده

Abstract Shear waves play a key role in seismic discrimination between explosions and earthquakes due to their different source mechanisms. However, shear are often observed field with unexpectedly large amplitude, generation mechanism is still significant unresolved question seismology. Many explanations have been proposed, including the asymmetry of explosive sources, heterogeneity and/or anisotropy Earth’s subsurface. it has not well understood whether or velocity structure can independently sufficiently explain generated by explosions. Theoretically, tangential SH be converted scattered from vertical radial SV heterogeneity. Thus, essential understand In this study, we utilize frequency–wavenumber algorithm 1D layered models simulate waveforms isotropic double-couple at local distances (<20 km). Our results suggest that may generate comparable if both occurred within near-surface gradient zone. The earliest appear originate near-source region. It implies P/SV amplitude ratios could indistinguishable under certain circumstances.

ANALYSIS OF HIGH-FREQUENCY Pg/Lg RATIOS FROM NTS EXPLOSIONS AND WESTERN U.S. EARTHQUAKES

The high-frequency P g /L g discriminant is studied between frequencies of 0.5 and 10 Hz using 294 NTS explosions and 114 western U.S. earthquakes recorded at four broad band seismic stations operated by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The stations are located at distances of about 200 to 400 km from the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Event magnitudes ranged from about 2.5 to 6.5 and propagati...

Relocating a Cluster of Earthquakes Using a Single Seismic Station

Coda waves arise from scattering to form the later arriving components of a seismogram. Coda-wave interferometry (CWI) is an emerging tool for constraining earthquake source properties from the interference pattern of coda waves between nearby events. A new earthquake location algorithm is derived which relies on coda-wave-based probabilistic estimates of earthquake separation. The algorithm ca...

Single station estimation of earthquake early warning parameters by using amplitude envelope curve

In this study, new empirical relationships to estimate key parameters in Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system including magnitude, epicentral distance and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) are introduced based on features of the initial portion of P-wave’s amplitude envelope curve. For this purpose, 226 time series recorded by bore-hole accelerometers of Japanese KiK-net are processed for earthq...

A Study of Two Short-period Discriminants

This paper is the result of a large-population study of discrimination between earthquakes and explosions, using only short-period data from a single station. The data was obtained from the Large Aperture Seismic Array and the two discriminants studied were waveform complexity and spectral ratio. Procedures for multivariate discrimination are developed and results are given in terms of earthqua...
